Richard Hugh McCaw, born on December 31, 1980, in Oamaru, North Otago, New Zealand, is widely regarded as one of the greatest rugby union players in history. Standing at 1.88 meters and weighing 105 kilograms during his playing career, McCaw's physical prowess was matched by his tactical intelligence and leadership on the field. He captained the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks, in 110 out of his 148 test matches, leading them to two Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. ​

Early Life and Education

McCaw was raised on his family's farm in the Hakataramea Valley. His grandfather, Jim McCaw, a World War II pilot, introduced him to gliding at a young age, sparking a lifelong passion for aviation. He attended Otago Boys' High School in Dunedin, where he began to take rugby seriously, eventually becoming head boy in his final year. McCaw later enrolled at Lincoln University to study agricultural science but left early to pursue a professional rugby career. ​

Rugby Career

McCaw's professional rugby journey began with Canterbury in 2000, followed by the Crusaders in 2001. He made his All Blacks debut in 2001 against Ireland, earning the 'Man of the Match' award. Over his 14-year international career, McCaw achieved a record 148 test caps, with 110 as captain, and maintained an impressive 89% winning record. He was named World Rugby Player of the Year three times (2006, 2009, 2010) and was awarded World Rugby Player of the Decade (2011–2020). ​

Post-Retirement Activities

After retiring in 2015, McCaw pursued his passion for aviation, obtaining a commercial helicopter pilot's license and working with Christchurch Helicopters. He also engaged in adventure racing, completing grueling multi-day events that tested his endurance and resilience. Additionally, McCaw has been involved in various charitable activities, including disaster relief efforts. ​

Personal Life

In 2017, McCaw married Gemma Flynn, a former New Zealand field hockey player. The couple has a daughter named Charlotte. ​
